Buddhism · careful speech · 3-minute practice
In this Buddhist discourse, well-spoken words are timely, truthful, gentle, beneficial, and offered with goodwill. Anger may be pointing to something that deserves attention. Our practice is to give that concern a usable shape: one observable event, its effect, and a clear request. The aim is a sentence you can stand behind tomorrow, even if the other person responds poorly.
Three small steps
- Write the event as a camera might record it, leaving out guesses about motives.
- Add its effect on you and one concrete request for what should happen next.
- Read the sentence once; choose a suitable time and remove words meant mainly to wound.
A question to carry
What do I need this person to understand, beyond knowing that I am angry?
Keep this in mind
Goodwill can include firm limits and leaving an unsafe conversation.
Our practice, inspired by the five qualities of speech in AN 5.198.
